The Unsinkable Molly Brown

During our recent Women in History cocktail class we talked about Margaret Brown aka the Unsinkable Molly Brown. She was a philanthropist, hostess, and Titanic survivor who was the creator of the Bees Knees Cocktail!

During the First World War, she moved to France to help the war effort, where her work organizing female ambulance drivers, nurses, and food distributors earned her the French Legion of Honor.

She was a passionate campaigner for women’s rights throughout her life, lobbying heavily for the suffrage movement. In 1929 during the last years of prohibition, the Brooklyn Standard Union wrote an article on the women-only bars popular in Paris that were attracting female cocktail lovers from around the world.

In the paper they reported on the favorite drinks of it’s patrons, including Margaret Brown and the Bees Knees… “the Bees Knees is an invention of Mrs. J.J. Brown of Denver & Paris, widow of the famous miner, and is a rather sweet combination including honey, lemon and gin.” YUM!

We’ve included a recipe for you below and we recommend using Old Tom gin or Genever as it was likely the most widely available spirit used during that time - plus it’s super tasty!

BEES KNEES COCKTAIL

  • 2 oz Old Tom Gin or Genever*

  • 3/4 oz lemon juice

  • 1/2 oz honey syrup

  • 2 dashes Charred Cedar + Currant Bitters

  • Garnish: lemon twist

*London Dry Gin will also work here

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice & shake for 15 seconds.
Double strain into chilled coupe. Garnish with a fresh lemon peel expressed over the glass & placed inside.
